Industrial Hygienist
Primary duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Manages the Industrial Hygiene Program and provides safety and health expertise in the development of policies, procedures and training to the complex Health Care System. Protects employees and customers from exposure to toxic substances, harmful physical agents, and other safety/health hazards. Develops and conducts safety/ health training plans for employees on health subjects (i.e. chemical, biological and physical safety/health requirements). Work with various outside contractors. Schedules and performs surveys of patient care and non-patient care activities. Performs accident investigations, injury /illness record-keeping and safety/health complaints. Advises senior level management officials, supervisors, and employees on the status of safety and occupational health programs. Evaluates service-specific Safety/Health plans for completeness and compliance with Joint Commission, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and VA standards. Applies and performs special environmental monitoring/sampling tasks with a variety of instruments. Maintains asbestos inspector and program management planner annual certifications. Manages safety/health programs (i.e. Respiratory Protection Program, Joint Commission Management Plans, Personal Protective Equipment and Confined Space Program). Work Schedule:

The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday, and frequent reaching, bending and lifting, occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds. Work requires pushing /pulling loaded carts of supplies, equipment, and waste. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Basic Requirements The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; OR A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, bio-statistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). Transcripts are required at the time of application Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement, you must meet the specialized experience as described below:

Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-09 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Recognizes, evaluates, implements corrective actions, and eliminates environmental conditions in the workplace that causes sickness, impaired health, or illness. Creates safety/health programs(i.e. respiratory protection, asbestos and safety/health hazards). Provides health/safety training to leadership, employees and staff members. Utilizes industrial hygiene monitoring equipment. Performs sampling and analysis of health/safety data. OR Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. OR Combination:
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-11. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
